LATE NIGHT BROWSING GIVES YOUNGSTERS NOCTURNAL BLUES

India is on a digital high. India is among the top five countries in the world when it comes to the pace of growth in internet users. There are over 432 million Internet users in India according to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). With hectic schedules, many youngsters are catching up online at night and thereby losing their sleep. Recent studies show that 93 percent in India are sleep deprived and this is so because of their Internet browsing habits. 



SOUND SLEEP MATTERS

1. Lack of sleep can play can pay a sigificant role in insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.
2. Over a the long term, poor sleep can contribute to chronic health problems, from obesity to an increased risk for cancer and psychological well-being. 
3. Lack of sleep raises your risk of accidents and occupational errors.


A VICIOUS CIRCLE

Do you stay up late or wake up in the middle of the night and end up spending hours online? You are not alone. "Staying up late is an everyday story. Our classed stat at 9 am and traffic for breakfast peaks at 8.45 am because most of us only wake up at 8.15-8.30 am," says Madhav Joshi, a third-year engineering student. Lenishya D'Soua, a commerce student, who started working recently, says, "Earlier I would stay up till 3-4 am and wake up at 10-11 am. If I did not want to go to college I would not. But now I feel exhausted and have no energy left to stay up late and check things online."

LATE NIGHTS ON THE RISE

With young professionals juggling their jobs, passions and other responsibilities, they feel late nights are their only option to catch p on the 'happenings' of the whole day. "Throughout the day I keep posting things online but with a full-time job it gets hectic. Only during the night, I get a chance to catch up with all the content and platforms that I follow," says Nigar Khan, a fashion blogger. Bhumit shah, an architect, agrees. "I am up till 4 am almost every day - till 3 am there's work and theen an hour of browsing . Earlier I would chek social media platforms through the day but now, I do that only once."

HOW IT AFFECTS THE MIND

The stiulation that Internet provides keeps one hooked, like the levels which are crossed while playing games or chatting online gives. "It gives a feeling of thrill, interconnectivity and importance. While avoiding the real world challenges, it caters to loneliness and or isolation. Problematic Internet use is also known as complusive Internet use (CIU) and there are scales to assess this disorder, " explains Nimish Rastogi, a clinical psychologist. She adds that the simplest way to determine the level of addiction is to assess which ther arenas like work, health, etc. of their lives are being affected.

IT CAUSES HEALTH DISORDERS

"Staying up late causes hormonal imbalance and the cortisol levels shoot up. You crave food odd hours and this will lead to eating and sleeping disorders. The fact that you're glued to a screen also means that you are at risk of insomnia. High blood pleasure and cholesterol will follow," says Dr Rucha Mehta, an endocrinology and metabolism expert. Not to mention that lack of sleep hurts productivity during work hours and lead to an eventual burnout.
